Classes and Other Offerings
Enrollment is open to students who are studying the violin, viola, cello or guitar with a Suzuki teacher using the Suzuki Method. Institute classes develop technique, musicality, note reading and ensemble playing under the guidance of highly trained Suzuki teachers. The Institute is a family experience. Students 12 and younger must be accompanied by one or both parents or a responsible adult. Ideally, there should be one parent or adult per student observing all classes.
A Pre-Twinkle program is open to beginning level students who have not yet mastered all of the Twinkle Variations. An expanded Advanced String Program is open to violin students in Book 6 or above, Viola and Cello students in Book 4 and above. Pre-Twinkle Program
The Pre-Twinkle Violin Program is designed for students who have not yet mastered the Twinkle Variations. It includes four daily classes: a master class, a small group class, an Orff class and storytime hour.
Intermediate Program
For students in Suzuki Violin Books 1-5, Viola and Cello Books 1-3. Guitar Book 1 and above. Two options are available:
4 Classes – includes a master class, technique class, repertoire class and Orchestra, Ready to Read or Orff. 5 Classes – includes all of the above plus your choice of one enrichment class.Institute classes are designed to develop technique, musicality, note reading and ensemble playing under the guidance of experienced and highly trained Suzuki teachers. Advanced String Program
For students in Suzuki Violin Book 6 and beyond, Viola and Cello Books 4 and beyond. This program begins Sunday morning July 25 and continues Monday through Friday. There are 5 daily classes: master class, repertoire class, orchestra, chamber music, and jazz improvisation orchestra. Students are expected to set aside a minimum of one hour each day for individual practice.

Music Literacy Classes
Students enrolled in Pre-Twinkle, Intermediate and Advanced String programs will be placed according to their age, playing and reading levels, into one of the following classes:
ORFF:
For Pre-Twinkle enrollees and violinists, violists and cellists 6 and under in Suzuki Book 1 who have not yet begun to read music. Students will engage in activities that involve the whole body through speech, body percussion, singing, movement (both creative and folk dance), and improvising. Designed to enhance music literacy skills in an environment that encourages joy and personal success.
READY TO READ:
For students 7 and older who have not yet begun reading music. This course is designed as an introduction into the "language of music" and is directed toward the student who is not yet ready to participate in an orchestra. Instruction will include basic fundamentals of music such as pitch and rhythm, and identification of musical symbols and notation.
ORCHESTRA:
Students in the Intermediate program already reading music at a basic level of accomplishment will be assigned to one of our three orchestras, according to their stated level of playing and reading. Advanced String Camp participants will perform in the ASC Orchestra.
Enrichment Classes for 5-Class Intermediate Program Participants
The New Mexico Suzuki Institute offers a variety of exciting enrichment classes. The 5 class schedule includes your choice of one as listed below. Please indicate your priority (1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice) on the registration form. Enrollment for each of these classes is limited and we may not be able to provide your first choice of enrichment class.
Brothers and sisters of students who are attending the Institute may register for any enrichment class on a space-available basis. Parents may register, too, however, classes should not interfere with parent's requirement to attend their child's classes. To register, fill out registration form and indicate "enrichment only" in the class placement section. Siblings may sign up for as many as three classes. Enrichment classes are $80 per class per class per student.

All participants 13 and older are invited to participate in scheduled social activities as part of their program. These activities will be supervised by experienced adult counselors and may include a pizza party, popcorn and a movie, ice cream social, jam session or game night.
Responsible participants 13 and older have the option of attending the Institute without their parents and will stay in the Teen Dorm. Teens will be assigned to a traditional dormitory style rooms, two to a room. Counselors who are experienced musicians will supervise the participants in the residence halls and during recreational or other activities. Teens are expected to abide by the established regulations and code of conduct. The Institute reserves the right to remove any student who chooses to behave otherwise. Cost $475. This includes lodging Sunday, 7/25 through Friday, 7/30 with a full meal plan.
Concerts & Performances
Each student is invited to attend the Solo Honors Performances, attend evening concerts, and participate in Play-Ins. All students will participate in the Celebration Concert on Friday evening. Students are encouraged to audition for the Solo Honors Performances.

Family Fun Nights
Everyone is invited to our Sunday evening Family Fun show. We have lots of surprises in store for all, hosted by Jamie O’Hara, The Magic Guy. This is a wonderful way for families to get to know one another early in the week!!!
Parent Education
Throughout the week, parents are invited to special sessions designed to interest and motivate them in the process of nurturing their student’s musical development.
Solo Honors Performances
We offer the opportunity for students to participate in our Solo Honors Recitals. Their intent is to inspire and motivate other students, parents and teachers by demonstrating good posture, musicianship and careful study. Students of all levels will be considered. All students are invited to audition by sending a DVD (standard format - no “mini-DVD”), videotape (VHS format, US playback system only) or decent quality webcast (YouTube link) of a performance of a well polished and memorized piece with accompaniment if applicable. Audition recording without appropriate piano accompaniment will not be considered.
Application must be postmarked to the Institute by May 31, 2010. Videotapes and DVD’s become the property of the Institute. Late applications cannot be accepted. To download an application click here. Please refer to complete instructions on the form when submitting your application and tape.
